Rebuttoned

Recycling Fashion’s Smallest Detail Through

Upcycling Second-Hand Garments

Rebuttoned is my bachelor thesis project in Design, developed during my final year at IE University. The project started with a simple discovery: thousands of second-hand buttons collected in the souks of Marrakech. From there, I began to rethink the role of buttons—not just as functional fastenings, but as decorative and symbolic elements with a long history as markers of style and status.

Through Rebuttoned, I created a series of upcycled garments that integrate recycled buttons as key design features. The project combines hands-on sewing, research into fashion history, and a sustainable approach to materials, aiming to show how even overlooked details can transform our relationship to clothing. At its core, Rebuttoned is about circularity, personalization, and giving new meaning to the garments we wear.
